Well known as one of the pioneering leaders of modern architecture, Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe known as ‘Mies’ set out to create a new architectural style which represented modern times through his contemporary furniture designs. And that he did. His career in architecture began in Berlin working as an architect first, with the famous Bruno Paul and Peter Behrens.
It was when he was asked to design the German Pavilion for the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona, that Mies created one of his most well known designs today the ‘Barcelona Chair’, which featured in the Pavilion as a modern throne for their majesties. This chair is the most celebrated piece of modern furniture designed by Mies and perhaps one of the best-known modern lounge chairs from the 20th century.
Using new industrial technologies Mies went onto to design and create many more popular classics, which display his detailed craftsmanship and a perfect blend of art and function.
““This is no less true of steel and concrete [than of wood, brick and stone]. We must remember that everything depends on how we use a material, not on the material itself....New materials are not necessarily superior. Each material is only what we make it.” Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe
