Designer: Poul Kjaerholm (1929 – 1980)

Another classic designer from Denmark, Kjaerholm always had a creative mind , starting off his design career hands on as an apprentice cabinet maker for Gronbech, in 1948. He studied at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen in 1952, where he later became a professor in his field of design.

He practiced mostly with the use of plywood and together experimented with steel and woven cane. His designs were innovative and won many awards around Europe, specifically for his PKO series and PK22 Chair, which is still widely replicated today!

Kjaerholm’s designs were handed over to the Replic of Fritz Hansen, an established designer in his own right, where these designs were manufactured from the 1980s. After being discontinued from Fritz Hansen in 2003, Kjaerholm’s son began to manufacture under the name Kjaerholm Productions. Found in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, his designs are world recognized with his modern clean lines and classic shapes.

“Steel's constructive potential is not the only thing that interests me; the refraction of light on its surface is an important part of my artistic work. I consider steel a material with the same artistic merit as wood and leather.”” Poul Kjaerholm
